This morning I took an Ollie-approved load of clothing to a charity I recently discovered, @westwelcomewagon , who provide material aid and support to asylum seekers and refugees in Melbourne’s west.

I’m posting about this, first, to share their organisation. If I didn’t know it existed until recently, you may not either. But second, to talk about some of the feelings that can come up about clothing. Specifically, letting go of clothes that no longer work for us. At the risk of sounding melodramatic, I suspect there may be some of my audience who can relate….

For a long time, I’ve found the task of sorting through and letting go of clothes a taxing, often emotional task.

Going through clothes reminds me of the money I’ve spent - often wasted - trying to find that “perfect piece” that will finally make me feel good enough.

I regret the blatant and wasteful consumerism of it all.

Clothes often remind me of specific memories, moments, or people, and how I felt when I last wore them. There can be a lot of attachment and grief.

They remind me of the sadness and disappointment I sometimes feel about my body. That it can no longer accommodate some of my favourite pieces.

Even though I work in this space, I’m not immune to these feelings. Even though I know that beauty and health are not found in only one body type, and I no longer believe they are; still, that deep programming can rise in these moments.

I’ve gone through this exercise many times, however, I felt this morning that I was able to be a bit more ruthless about letting go. Thinking about how these items will be used by some of the most vulnerable members of our society was helpful. The thought that I could do the smallest thing by letting go of something I’m not using to give to someone who may have lost everything, put things in perspective.

I can’t say the job is done. I’ll admit that there’s still some things i haven’t been ready to let go of. For now, they live in a box, out of sight, until I’m ready - leaving space for a wardrobe that I can open and know that everything fits, feels comfortable, and makes me feel confident.

Hi friends! It’s been over a year since I did one

Hi friends! It’s been over a year since I did one of these posts, and a bit has changed, so this is a fresh hello 👋🏻

My name is Bianca, I am a general psychologist and clinical hypnotherapist. I work mostly with individuals and families impacted by eating disorders and other struggles related to disordered eating and body image concerns. I also work with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD, and other addictions. And I offer gut-directed hypnotherapy for IBS! I see individuals of all ages and gender, and in all stages of recovery. I also work with many neurodivergent individuals and members of the queer community (of which I am part of). I am based in Melbourne, Australia, and I offer in-person sessions as well as Telehealth.

As well as a clinical hat, I also wear a research hat. This year I began a PhD which I’m really excited about. I will be working with The National Eating Disorders Collaboration. We’ll be looking at embedding eating disorder training in tertiary healthcare curricula which reduces weight stigma in healthcare; an issue which significantly intersects with increasing numbers of eating disorders in our society, and one I feel very passionate about.

Wearing these two hats means dividing up my time. This divide may change as needed, nonetheless, I currently have my calendar open for appointments on Monday evenings, Tuesday’s, and Saturday’s. Link in bio for more information on the website, and a direct link to the booking system.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I love a horror mo

Anyone who knows me, knows that I love a horror movie. Borrowing (perhaps paraphrasing) the words of director, @natalieejames , “Horror is psychological; it’s a genre which allows us to externalise the hidden horrors of our inner landscape”.

So, I could hardly turn down the opportunity to see an advance screening of new Australian horror, @saccharinemovie , complete with a Q&A with the director, Natalie Erika James, at her and my local cinema (how cool is that!), @suntheatre in Yarraville. The evening did not disappoint.

TRIGGER WARNING - If you are feeling fragile in your relationship with food or recovery, this one might not be for you right now (think numbers, lots of scenes/images of ED behaviours and thinking, thin idealisation, etc.).

If you are in a good place though, then I highly recommend it. Saccharine offers an allegory of the way diet culture, and an eating disorder, will eat you from the inside out, taking from you everything that you value and love in the end. Through the use of diet drug, “grey”, the movie explores themes of control, shame, judgment, self-judgment, looking for the “quick fix”, longing for love and acceptance, and the lengths that we may go, to achieve these things.

Last nights comedy fundraiser for @eatingdisorders

Last nights comedy fundraiser for @eatingdisordersvictoria was probably one of the best nights of comedy I’ve ever been to. Hosted by @rhysnicholson , every single act afterwards was brilliant. Honestly, not a single act, let alone even a single line fell flat, it was 90 minutes of comedic excellence.

Thanks to the generous performers who donated their time, @hannah_gadsby , @_denisescott , @nathvalvo , @rowanthambar_ , and @lloydlangford1 , the night raised $10k for continued free services through Eating Disorders Victoria. Win win!
